Food Trailer Guide

Where you’ll sell

Decide this before you apply for anything. Where you park sets which licence you need and what paperwork goes with it.

Decide how you'll sell

One fixed spotThe same place every day you open, usually on private property.
Moving aroundDifferent spots on different days.
Events and marketsFestivals, fairs and farmers’ markets, booked through the organizer.

Many cities license these differently, and some charge more to move around than to stay in one place. Pick the one that fits your plan before you apply.

On private property

Get the property owner’s permission in writing. Several cities, including Mississauga and Markham, ask for it with the licence application. Check with the city that the property’s zoning allows a food vehicle there.

In parks and on public property

You’ll need a separate permit from the city. Many cities only allow food vehicles at set locations, or through a seasonal program. Ask the city’s licensing or parks office.

Other towns: ask the licensing or parks office, or start from the city licence links.

At events and markets

Book through the organizer. Health units such as Halton and Durham also want a separate vendor application for each event, sent weeks ahead. Some cities offer a short-term event licence if you’re not licensed there.
