Food Trailer Guide

Food Trailer Planning Guide

We build and sell food trailers in St. Thomas, Ontario. This guide walks you through the decisions that come before you buy, so you get a trailer that fits your menu and your town.

How to start a food trailer business

Most new owners spend the winter planning and open in spring. Here is the order that saves the most time and money.

  1. Start with your menu

What you cook decides the equipment, the size of the trailer and whether it needs propane. Settle the menu first and everything else follows from it.

  2. Decide where you'll sell

One fixed spot, moving around, or events. Each needs different paperwork, so decide before you apply.

  3. Choose the right trailer

Length, electric or propane, power and water. Work out what the trailer has to do before you compare sizes.

  4. Get ready for the health inspection

Hand sink, dishwashing sink, hot and cold water and easy-to-clean surfaces. Know the checklist before the trailer is built, not after.

  5. Line up your permits

Business registration, insurance, health unit notice and your city licence. Know what's on the list and plan your opening date around it.
